You’ll be saying swipe, tap, relax - with Smartpay your payments are secure! Security is core to Smartpay and something we focus on throughout everything we do. Security features are built-in to all Smartpay EFTPOS terminals so you can rest easy knowing your money and data is safe.
EFTPOS payments are generally quite secure! At the same time, it is also up to individual companies in the payment industry to ensure they stay up to date with the latest security standards and best practices.
Some of the main security threats with EFTPOS payments include physical tampering or skimming, cyber-attacks and fraud.
EFTPOS tampering or ‘skimming’ is when someone illegally copies card details. There are a number of things you can do to reduce the risk of card skimming, including:
Physically inspecting the terminal to check for tampering or additions to the terminal
Not leaving the terminal unattended
Ensuring your staff is aware of the risks of EFTPOS skimming and can report incidents
With cyber-attacks becoming more prevalent, it’s increasingly important that your EFTPOS provider takes security seriously. Smartpay uses best-in-class tools, helping you to stay protected against cyber attacks.
Transactions made to your business from stolen credit cards can lead to chargebacks. This is when a payment is returned to the payment card after the transaction has been disputed.
Chargebacks can result in your business providing services that ultimately you don’t get paid for. It’s important to watch out for fraudulent transactions. Smartpay’s chargeback and fraud prevention guide provides guidance on this.
Steps can be taken to reduce the risk of EFTPOS fraud.

To keep your EFTPOS terminals safe, don’t let unauthorised people tamper with your terminal(s). Always verify the identity of any third-party persons claiming to be repair or maintenance personnel before granting them access to modify or troubleshoot your device. You can ask for photo identification or call Smartpay Customer Service to verify.
If you observe suspicious behaviour and indications of device tampering or substitution, report the incident as soon as possible to Smarpay’s 24/7 technical support team on 1800 433 876 and contact your store manager or owner.
